Who We Are

Passages Francophones was founded in Fall 2025 with support from French in Higher Education, a program of the Albertine Foundation and Villa Albertine—the French Institute for Culture and Education—and the Department of Romance & Arabic Languages and Literatures at the University of Cincinnati. We are a student-run journal that welcomes contributions in French and English from undergraduate students at all institutions. Our editorial approach values interdisciplinarity, intellectual curiosity, creativity and collaboration. We consider each contribution to the journal as part of a broader conversation that connects different interests, personal experiences, and perspectives. We are especially attentive to work that engages with global francophone contexts through a critical and original lens. Our goal is to create a space for all  voices and topics.

Passages Francophones

The title of the journal reflects our interest in connections, movements and processes. Passages refers to bridges between languages, places, disciplines, and forms of expression, that we aim to build.Passages is also an acknowledgement of different stages in peoples’ journeys. All contributions are welcome whether you speak French, are interested in francophone cultures, or have recently discovered some connections to your own lived and academic experiences. We see the paths students follow in their work, from the questions they ask to the choices they make along the way as passages. For us, Francophonie is not confined to borders on a map or to a single mode of engagement with French. It is shaped by encounters and lived experience that extend beyond academic categories, and by forms of movement and exchange that situate Francophone spaces within wider global contexts. For this reason, the journal encourages experimentation across forms. Contributions may take the shape of academic writing, visual or artistic projects, photography, poetry, or other formats that allow students to explore their relationship to Francophone contexts in a way that feels meaningful to them.
