Who We Are

Passages Francophones was founded in Fall 2025 with support from French in Higher Education, a program of the Albertine Foundation and Villa Albertine—the French Institute for Culture and Education—and the Department of Romance & Arabic Languages and Literatures at the University of Cincinnati. We are a student-run journal that welcomes contributions in French and English from undergraduate students at all institutions. Our editorial approach values interdisciplinarity, intellectual curiosity, creativity and collaboration. Each contribution to the journal is understood as part of a broader conversation that connects different interests, lived experiences, and perspectives. We are particularly attentive to work that engages global Francophone contexts in critical and original ways. The journal aims to foster an inclusive space that welcomes a wide range of voices and topics.

Passages Francophones

The title of the journal reflects our interest in connections, movements, and processes. Passages evokes the bridges we aim to build between languages, places, disciplines, and forms of expression. We like to call our contributors Passagers, a term that reflects the intellectual, creative, and personal journeys that inform their work. All contributions are welcome, whether you speak French, are interested in Francophone cultures, or have recently discovered connections between these contexts and your own lived or academic experiences. We understand the paths students trace in their work—from the questions they ask to the choices they make along the way—as passages in themselves.  For us, Francophonie is not confined to borders on a map or to a single mode of engagement with the French language. It is shaped by encounters and lived experiences that exceed categories, as well as by movements and exchanges that situate Francophone spaces within wider global contexts. For this reason, the journal encourages experimentation across forms. Contributions may take the shape of academic writing, visual or artistic projects, photography, poetry, or other formats that allow students to explore their relationship to Francophone contexts in ways that feel meaningful to them.
